Friend and keen photographer Greg Matthews brought in this gem of a picture for restoration. His grandfather John Matthews (1889-1974) was originally from Hay in western NSW and set up the first saddlery and leather business in Leeton not long before World War 1.
When he sold the saddlery to join the Light Horse Brigade the purchaser refused his tools of trade, saying that it was too personal. John came home from the war, picked up his tools of trade and went back to work.
I particularly like the young fella in the foreground with his shiny bike….
